Using the Goal Trackers in RunningMate

There are two goal trackers in RunningMate:

Campaign Goal Tracker & Voter Registration Intent Goal Tracker

These are powerful tools that allow users to set goals for their district. The Campaign Goal Tracker helps users calculate their win number, set outreach goals, and measure progress towards those goals at both a district and precinct level. They can help identify priority precincts - those with the most opportunity for improvement.

Voter Registration Intent Goal tracker allows users who have access to the unregistered data in the platform to set voter registration goals - the number of people they'd like to get to commit to register to vote. Then as contact is made with potential voters who indicate that they intend to register to vote, that progress can be monitored.

The Campaign Goal Tracker

Setting your Campaign Goals:

First, click Goal Tracker on the left hand side of the RunningMate screen.

Once users have completed the series of steps, a new map showing the overall campaign progress will appear.

Click Campaign Goals, which will bring up the following screen:

Click Calculate Campaign Goals.

Step 1 of 4: Similar Election Data

This screen will ask users to add data for between one and three past similar elections. Generally, this information will be found on the Secretary of State’s office website. For detailed instructions, see the finding similar election data article. We recommend adding information from 3 past elections when calculating the Win Number and goals.

Step 2 of 4: Campaign Win Number and Turnout Estimates

This page shows the likely voting rate based on the past turnout that was input in the previous screen, the current number of registered voters, and below that is the win number estimate and margin of victory.

  • Each of these three fields can be adjusted.
  • Adjusting the margin of victory will increase the win number estimate from its default 3%

Step 3 of 4: Strategic Goals

The top shaded portion of the page shows the Support Goal, which is the Win Number multiplied by 150%.

This step breaks down your support into categories: Inferred Support and Voter ID Goal, which is broken down further into Turnout and Persuasion Universes.

The Voter ID Goal represents voters that the campaign needs to gain support and votes from to win the election. These goals can be adjusted on this page.

  • Inferred Support - support the campaign likely already have just by being a Democrat. These are your base voters - highly Democratic and highly likely to turnout to vote.
  • Voter ID Goal - Turnout: these are voters who are likely to vote Democratic when they vote. They need to be persuaded to turn out and vote in this election.
  • Voter ID Goal - Persuasion: these are voters who are likely to vote, but may need to be persuaded to vote for your candidate.

Step 4 of 4: Overview of Campaign Goals

This page allows users to review the campaign goals that have been set before saving them.

After Setting your Campaign Goals, Monitor Your Progress

Goal tracker reflects the goals that have been set and the progress that's been made towards those goals. As the campaign makes contact with the constituents, gains their support, and updates their support scores, that progress is reflected in Goal Tracker. The support will be reflected on the Overall Campaign Progress panel as well as on the Goal Tracker map itself.

When users first set the goals, the map will be white like in the above screenshot, unless they've already added Support Scores either via imports in the Data Management tool, or by searching for individuals and adding those scores as the person is canvassed. Support Scores of a 1 or a 2 (indicating support) will move the needle on the support progress shown in the Overall Campaign Progress screen.

By hovering over or selecting precincts, users can view the campaign’s progress toward the precinct-level goals. The progress meter shows how many of the targets are likely to be supporters.

Selecting precincts:

Users have the option to select precincts by clicking the precinct shape on the map, or by clicking the arrow next to the Precincts filter and either scrolling to or typing the precinct name.

Select Priority Precincts to show the precincts we have identified as having the most opportunity to make an impact on your campaign - these will be the precincts with the highest concentrations of Persuasion and Turnout targets. Users can then see these priority precincts on the lefthand side of the Goal Tracker page, they can select or de-select precincts they think should be included or not included in the priority precinct list, then download the list of voters.

Goal Tracker allows campaigns to use RunningMate to focus their time and resources then measure the efficacy of those efforts across the lifespan of the election cycle.

What is the Voter Registration Intent Goal Tracker? (VR Goal Tracker)

Only users who have unlocked unregistered data can use this feature. With the VR Tracker you can build your voter registration universe by identifying individuals who are unregistered or planning to register to vote based on likely party affiliation. This feature allows you to organize a targeted voter registration effort, promote your candidacy, and track your progress.

How do I set up my VR Tracker?

Good news, setting up your voter registration intent tracker is a one-step process!

Select the 'Goal Tracker menu' on the left, then click on Voter Registration Intent Goal. A maximum of three target-types will be shown for Likely Democrat, Unknown, and Likely Republican.

These targets are pre-filled to the Max Target amount and can be adjusted.

Users can also view the progress through the map and/or the left panel (similar to campaign goals)

Who is able to use the Voter Registration Intent Tracker?

  • Owner and Admins are able to set, view, and reset voter registration intent goals
  • Data Manager, Data Viewer, and Volunteers are only able to view voter registration intent goals that have been set

What are the two types of methods for recording voter registration intent entries?

Importing by Spreadsheet

  • Adding VR intent to a spreadsheet to upload is easy - simply download the file for outreach. If a person has said yes they intend to register, add a Y the VR intent column of the spreadsheet. Then download it as a CSV and upload it back into the RunningMate platform, via the Data Management screen.

Recording Using Mobile or Desktop with Search Feature

  • Users can add the voter registration intent at without a spreadsheet by using the Search Individuals feature from their computer, or by logging in via a mobile device and adding the intent from there.
